Round one of the clubs winter league saw about 20 people freezing their butts off in the middle of Balsall Common. The route was a 4.5mile loop all on road, and mostly flat.

Being in group A (the slow ‘uns) we set off 5mins ahead of the others. It was only a small group but I was paranoid that I didn’t want to be at the front… kind of pointless really as about 15 seconds into the saw me powering to the, mainly courtesy of my mind remembering how fast I was running in the previous days interval session and totally forgetting how ill/ sore I felt shortly after.

I managed to build up around a 50m lead whilst I settled my pace down to the target of between 4.50min /km 5.00 min/km.

1 Mile… so far so good… on target… no pain… still in lead…

I don’t tend to run in my glass’s as they steam up which isn’t usually a problem as I can see the road, cars etc however I was struggling to read the small sign ahead of me… I slowed right down to examine it… “Dammit!… it says carry on”.

2 Mile… still going fairly well.. pace dropped a little… but still hovering around the 5min /km target… ut-oh can here footsteps behind

2.5 Mile… overtaken… bugger…. Ahh.. at least I can follow someone… ouch my shins hurt

3 Mile over taken by Rich, he’s in fast group… that’s ok… Christ he’s flying…

3.5 Mile… OMG how long is this mile (yeah I know its only one… but even so).. still on target with average pace of 4.58min/km

3.8 Mile… noooo overtaken by another group A…. must stick with her…sod it give up… no must keep going….

4 Mile… Finally!

4.2 Mile… Woot… 200m left… still on shoulder of person that passed me half a mile ago… time to turn on the pace…. Wooot Im flying…..

4.5 Mile ahh finished… 5 seconds ahead of my target person, average of 5.0 min/ km ooo maybe a sub 50 10k is possible…

Overall really pleasing race as it proved to me that Im on target with my training. I don’t feel that my next 10k will be a sub 50.. but its going to be bloody close.

Final Result 4.5 miles in 36.23
